What does punishment consist of

Mahem hasachar wehaonesh  מהם השׂכר והענשׁ

The system which God rewards good deeds and punishes evil deeds is unknown to us. Even Holy Scripture does not provide us much information on this topic. Although the Holy Scripture does not define precisely and in detail the rewards for the fulfillment of each individual commandment, nor the penalty for each violation of the commandments, it generally informs us about the blessing (the happy and long life) that is the reward for observing the prescribed laws, as well as the curse (the miserable, unhappy and short life), which is the penalty for not observing the prescribed laws. The justice of God gives us the assurance that penalties and rewards are always responses to the deeds of each individual. God, as the Creator and Protector of all beings gave redemptive laws, He judges (in His incomprehensible way) each human for his/her deeds.

There are passages of Holy Scripture that support the above mentioned claims:

Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if ye shall hearken unto the commandments of יהוה your God, which I command you this day; and the curse, if ye shall not hearken unto the commandments of יהוה your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known. (5M 11: 26-28)

And it shall come to pass, because ye hearken to these ordinances, and keep, and do them, that יהוה thy God shall keep with thee the covenant and the mercy which He swore unto thy fathers, and He will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee; He will also bless the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy land, thy corn and thy wine and thine oil, the increase of thy kine and the young of thy flock, in the land which He swore unto thy fathers to give thee. (5M 7: 12-13)

But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of יהוה thy God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee. Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field. Cursed shall be thy basket and thy kneading-trough. Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the young of thy flock. (5M 28: 15-18)

For God shall bring every work into the judgment concerning every hidden thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil. (Kohelet 12:14)

Great in counsel, and mighty in work; whose eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men, to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. (Jer 32:19)

Say ye of the righteous, that it shall be well with him; for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him; for the work of his hands shall be done to him. (Iza 3:10-11)

For the ways of man are before the eyes of יהוה, and He maketh even all his paths. (Proverbs 5:21)
